VIN check for Imported Defenders?

Does anyone know if there is a VIN check service, similar to Carfax here in the States, that checks the European records for vehicles?

I am considering buying a 1980's D110 and would like to better know its European history.

Thanks,
Greg

you can check some very basic info here, like if it is stolen:

http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/

select "vehicle inquiry"

you could also just try entering the VIN into google and see what comes up. I never tried that but just a thought.

It seems like they require the "number plate", which is different than the VIN.

Not necessarily. plates can be changed to "personalised" ones. The law here is that any plate can be re-fitted, as long as it doesn't make the vehicle look newer than it actually is.

Here (apart from prehistoric numbers) ours are all age related, for example 1992 was "J", 1993 "K", 1994 "L" "prefix", so J123 ABC, prior to this there were suffix's, so ABC 123J ("J" suffix was 1971), these days we have the year in the plate, like my Shogun is RF07WUK, the 07 being the first 6 months of 07 (the secong 6 months have a 5, so it would be RF57WUK .... god knows who though up these systems LOL!)

anyway, back to the original thread, the plate doesn't always stay with the vehicle, so the VIN is still very relavent.

If you PM me the VIN i can stick it into microcat, and maybe get some build details of it, although MC only really had detailed stuff from about Td5 (1999/2000) onwards.

Failing that you'll need to contact the DVLA with specific details and, i think 25 UKP, they'll then give you some info.

It's okay Dave, this does not effect my belief that you are a "Rover Wizard". Thanks for the input.

99% of plates stay with the car and even with the number through auto trader uk you will only find out if its stolen, totaled, scrapped or if theres any outstanding credit on it. You hold the log book (title) even if it is on credit. Insurance companies don't pass on any information other than the car totaled.

Got some answers

It turns out the "plate number" or "tax disc" number is imprinted on each and every sheet of glass on the truck. In my case it is E549 DHK. I took this number, went to the following website:

http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/Evl...vent=link.next

And then it instantly displayed the information regarding the last registration date, first registration date and a few other final stats. The real thing I was looking for was the registration date and the last time it was registered so I could guess around the time it was imported.

Pretty nifty . . .
