very custom interior

So I had a 1997 Defender which I sold in 2010 to pay for a semester of business school and because my Rimmer Supercharger was about to crater another motor. I tried a 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged but it wasn't the same. One thing I did like about it was the cooler box. During those interim years I also saw the SoundMan CA side slider kit for iPads for car stereos and I thought the Defender was a great application for it. Add in the Recaro seats, lock and fold rear seats, upgraded brakes, LS swaps and I was pretty excited to get back in.

I have a really talented sheet metal shop in Austin that I work with. They made the console. Quick note: I really considered getting the Icon console which is designed to house a double din radio in the front but between the seats. I just did not want to look down to adjust the radio. When I called them asking for the parts for the LED light, gas strut and USB/Power port combo they said they were bought exclusively from a vendor and could not be sold to consumers. Total BS. The rear USB/power port I have was the first thing that came up on google and is identical to theirs. I prefer my LED lighting to theirs too but the outrage definitely gave me some motivation. The logo on the dash pad will have to be re-done as somehow I wasn't clear on the orientation. The same shop did the one piece modified dash pad so they are definitely forgiven.

I've got an LS upgrade done too. I'll detail that in a separate post but the LS is the reason for the Dakota gauges and Lokar shifter. My metal shop was able to modify a Raptor Engineering metal dash cluster to work with the lokar setup which was cool as I like the metal dash much better than stock.

The iPad mount is one piece but requires significant modification to the dash pad. At the bottom it just follows the contours of the clock and L trim piece.

I did not like the NAS rear seat because I had 2 functions that it was not good at even when removed unless you also unbolted the brackets: hauling 20 gallons of gas to my boat and carrying golf clubs. I also wanted to try 2 8 inch subs firing down in a box bolted to the tailgate with half of the box for storage and the other half for the subs. That NAS seat would not fit. When I saw the Puma seats I knew I had my solution.

I'll start with the final result and then show some intermediate pics and explanations. First pic is the dash with the iPad installed. Second is the sub/storage enclosure and then the console. With no roof there is significant bass up to 60 miles an hour. At 80 you can tell it's there but there is a decay compared to 60. I have not listened to it yet with a fiberglass hardtop which is on the list.

The console shows the Range Rover Sport cooler box modified and note the iPad is stored in the underside of the lid.

Ash did the Puma tub. One cool thing he did was buy the Puma side panels and then install what I call his super floor. It's got the all aluminum, extra bracing and fuel pump access panel. You can see that in an old picture before the sound deadener and rubber matt were installed.

more detail

some detail on the iPad mount, the difficulty in building a one piece dash pad(I got another used one from Ash that wasn't in great shape for a donor) and the fuse panel under the console floor. Also the bracket with the audio control volume control(the knob is next to the clock), iStreamer and Wetsounds amp.

Evilfij,

They are Recaro cross sportser cs seats. Expensive but flat out awesome. There is also a kit to convert them to tip up bases like the stock seats while retaining the seat heater.
