Phil,

Just wondering if you also thought of MP3 players as well. No skip or moving parts to contend with. I think I saw one that had a fairly decent tuner as well.... Just another option.

yeah. i am happy with my setup (changer) i was wondering cause a fellow owner is looking into swapping out the stocker head unit for something aftermarket and i personally wondered what would work, or what other owners were using. thanks for the input i would like an MP3 but the ones i have checked out were a little $$

I have an Alpine in ours. Works fine and the only time it skips is if I slam the cubby top closed to hard.

Philip, I have heard the same thing that when vertical in the center console, it will burn out the cd player. I want get one with a jack in the front to plug in the iPod. Nice and simple.

I just put a Pioneer in my '94. The installer had done a D90 before nd made me aware of the vertical problem. He said that I was safe with a Poineer product. Two months now and not a problem.

Poineer!!!

Poineer should not skip, had one of their head units in 2 deferent cars, no problems with skipping, had Sony as well, replaced the Sony 2 times, both
Sony units skipped all the time but remember all units will skip based on how they're installed in the D-90 but so far the Poineer hasn't skipped yet...

As for MP3's, most Poineer's have an "Auxiliary" jack, you will need to buy a simple jack that attaches to the back of the head unit that allows you to use a mini-jack set-up, after that, iPod, no problems!!!

I have never had a skip with my Sony. It also has an aux input which I plug in my IPod. I think that you can't go wrong with either Sony or Pioneer. The Sony that I got is made for 4x4's. I guess it has extra dampening or an anti skip delay?????

It's all based on personal preferences I guess!!!

Making sure you can attach the "iPod" makes them even better, just make sure you take it with you, the iPod that is (do not leave in truck)!!!

WOW, thats allot of replies real fast.

Most of the new good CD players don't rely on gravity to position the CD so they don't skip or move out of place when they are held vertically.

I know...old thread...but I gotta comment and question:

I picked up a Nakamichi CD 400 and had it intalled vertically in my 97 SW. Surprise, surprise, it skips every 10 seconds. But the reason I choose it was for asthetics---it's all black and looks almost stock, unlike the new Alipines and Kenwoods that appear as if they were taken off Battlestar Galactica or something. Anybody know of a good head unit that will play vertically without skipping that has more of a stock look? Even an older model I can buy off Ebay would work for me.

Thanks

Before you give up on the Nakamichi, check the installation instructions or the unit itself. Some models have a damper switch that needs to be toggled based on the installation orientation of the unit. I can't speak to the unit in question, but worth a look before you give up on it. HTH. Mark

My Pioneer (have no clue the model) looks stock-esque, but it's in a Tuffy, so it really doesn't get seen that often.
Oh, and it doesn't skip, unless I'm beating the crap out of it.

I am running an Alpine CD headunit with no problem. I was told that for the majority of the time it is best to listen to the CD Changer as it is actually designed to handle being in a vertical position.

I have the Sony mex-1hd. It has a tray to hold cds so there is no skipping. Also, it has a mp3 capability, and a 10 gig hard drive to record your music on. About $300, and well worth it.

B, where did you get it for $300? I like the sounds of it but lowest I have found is $950.

I got it a couple of weeks ago at Circuit City. They are closing out this model and have them marked down really low. Regular price was something like $900.
