Are you referring to the flame trap on the pass side front rocker cover or the smaller vent filter on the rear of the drivers side rocker cover?

Sometimes they gum up, usually when the oil loses viscosity it can rise into the breather. Most I've seen are sealed so hard to tell if they are clogged.

I've seen them completely blocked at 80k and spotless at 140k. If there's access I'd replace it around 120k as that seems to be the point when a lot of them stop venting

It's just metal screen in the housing. You should be able to see daylight through it. I'm sure you could clean it in parts cleaner if gummed up.

I've cleaned the flame trap with diesel fuel or carb cleaner and just replaced.

Has anyone hogged out the little vent tube that the foam insert sits on. It ddoesn't seem like any amount of air can get through. I clean the metal flame trap a few times a year andI am always surprised at how nasty it is

I've never *hogged* one out but I have used a small stiff wire to ream it out and clean so it can suck the proper amount of air.
I think Widener had hogged his out and runs a giant vent on his hotrod 4.6

Will at least check to see if it needs to be de-clogged.

Should there be a hole drilled in this vent? Or is there just a pin hope I can't see? How does air get in?

Very small pin hole with a sponge filter and cap.

I just use a small guage wire and clean it out.

Can this be removed from the valve cover to be cleaned? I don't want any muck to fall in the valve cover.

I dont know that it can be removed from the rocker cover.
The vent hole is really small so any gunk that gets pushed inside is inconsequential IMO.
