US Import of 1990 Defender 110 with an Mercedes OM605 engine?

Hello,

is it possible to import an 1990 Defender 110 with an Mercedes OM605 engine into the US?
I know the engine was never imported into the US, so I guess not legally certified.
But does the 25 Year rule applies for that car, meaning a car older than 25years can be imported with any engine fittet?

On the other hand, can the same car be imported with an Ford 3.2 Puma TDCI engine which is now offered in the Ford Transit. I think the answer would be yes, right?

kind regards
Andreas

No.

The vehicle must have the same type engine it came with from the factory.

Technically yes, but I do not think they have been enforcing the rule. At least I have not heard of it happening. That said, I'm not sure I know of anyone that has tried since you can bring in TDI and TD5 trucks.

If you import to Canada, you are much better off getting a nice stock TD5 truck as it is a 15 year rule.

So, my second queston regarding the Puma 3.2 engie would also be not possible, although it is running legaly already in the ord transit?
There can be no excemption applied having a 25year old car with a aftermarket fitted legal engine?

I am asking specific about the 3.2 Puma as there was a threat here which was talking about that converting it into Defenders in US.

There is a guy in litigation right now with the Govt. about this very issue. The engine he had was "virtually" the same as what it came with from the factory. The engine was legal to import on it's own. Didn't matter, they took the car.

Interesting, because Eastcostdefenders.com are selling their cars with 6.2l GMC Diesel or V8 LS3 engines.

You can change the engine after import. It must match the original engine type when imported.

Thank you John. Makes all sense now.
Last question, if the car has a air suspension system and fox shocks, would this be a problem?
I.e. must the complete configuration of the car original?

regards
Andreas

Probably. Keep them standard to avoid problems. I have brought them in with Alloys etc without any problems, but if you start changing major components, you will run into difficulty. Its not worth the risk. If you want modified truck, find a good base first and do the upgrades in the US

Factory stock including chassis is more important than condition to comply with Govt regulations.
