Down the road i want to do some sort of performance mod to my 97 d-90, and I was wondering where i can buy things like headers, upgraded cams, and things like that for my 4.0L

Did you search?

Been discussed in the past.

Start out with these:

AluminumV8.com = D&D motors in MI
RPIV8.com across the pond. Good sight to learn about the GEMS and how counter-productive it is to upgrading.

Ben - Agree with Eric. Do some reading on the forum and RPIV8.com. I've done some 'tweaking' to my 4.0, so if you have any questions beyond that I may be able to help. PM me. HTH. Mark

counter-productive??????????
Not sure I would call it that!!
You will make gains depending on what you do but you will be limited by the engine management sys. KISS unless $$ is no object

What are you going to do without being able to unlock the GEMS?
All you maps are set for stock and without being able to adjust fuel and timing it's a gamble at best.

It's going to want to manage the engine as if it were stock. . .

I wouldn't use the term 'counter-productive' in regard to using stock GEMS software with engine mods. 'Inhibiting' is the term I would us as you may not get the full gain. Having said that, "unlocking" the GEMS software is not impossible, just costly. HTH. Mark

No on the pipeline wedding in charleston sc
you can port the heads intake & exaust cut the ram pipes this will not add alot of hp but the engine will rev quicker & run smooth. a super chip will also help a bit. none of these are gonna throw your head in the back but you will notice a difference. I have done these to my d1 & runs very well.

Isn't the superchip only one chip and therefore it does nothing to the fuel mapping unlike the RPI chips which are very expensive but will change both chips.

And I am not too savy with the lingo so could someone explain "port the heads intake".

superchip i think is spendy for what it does i got my chip used & pretty cheap
the rpi chip does replace both i have no exp with that chip
as far as mods for a gems truck making it breath better will help
i am not the know all but these are the things i have done. that being said i am building a 4.6 now & will let you know
porting is opening up the intake & exaust ports to match your gaskets
there is also casting marks & sharp edges that are smoothed out to make better flow you won't end up with a dragster but can be done if your a handy guy
