turn signal clicking

Strange thing happened today...After doing a couple of quick errands around town, I returned home , turned on my left turn signal and turned left into my garage.... As I sat in the defender with the engne idling in my garage I noticed that the "blinker " sound was still going, so I looked to see if the turn signal arm was still enagaged but it was not. Nothing on the dash was flashing indicating any turn signal or light so I shut the engine off and removed the key yet the "blinker" sound continued...it sounds exactly like it does when the turn signal is on. I double checked to make sure no lights or hazards blinking and they were not.

I finally put the key back in and turned the ignition to on and the blinking stopped....any ideas?

forgot to mention that it was raining a bit and I was using the windshield wipers for the first time in weeks
not sure if is related...

Follow-up Post:

no alarm installed there was one that didn't work when I bought the Defender but it was disconnected by the guys at ECR

Follow-up Post:

Thanks Brian you were right it is related to a faulty alarm ECU I managed to find an old thread and it was an issue in some 97 D-90s. Looks like a simple fix...

Thanks

Hum..... That might explain the issue I have seen recently (which disappeared....) on my '96 Disco. Do you might sharing a link to the thread regarding the alarm ECU issue(s)? Really appreciate it! :-)

This is what I found it's great information!
Antitheft System - Dash Area Clicking Noise

No:

86/03/98/NAS

Ref:

WSM Section 86

Issue:

1

Date:

07/17/98

Clicking in 10AS Control Unit

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

DEFENDER (LD) VA992105 to VA999484

VA100300 to VA126471

SITUATION:

INTERMITTENT CLICKING NOISE FROM DASHBOARD

An intermittent clicking noise may be heard coming from the dashboard on some '97 model year Defenders. The clicking noise sounds very similar to a turn signal flasher in frequency and loudness. Once the clicking noise begins, it will continue until the ignition switch is cycled off and then on again. The source of the clicking noise is a relay within the immobilization control unit (10AS unit). A revised unit is now available to address this symptom.

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE IMMOBILIZATION UNIT

To address a customer complaint matching the above description, verify that the source of the clicking noise is the alarm ECU and replace the unit with the latest type.

PARTS INFORMATION:

AMR6430A Immobilization Unit

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

86.77.01 Time 0.70 hrs.

Replace 10AS ECU

FAULT CODE: Z

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

REPLACE IMMOBILIZATION (ALARM) CONTROL UNIT

1.

Refer to the procedure in Workshop Manual Section 86, Page 16, Operation 86.77.01.

2.

Remove the 10AS unit from the vehicle.

3.

Install the new 10AS (AMR6430A) and initialize with TestBook.

Not quite the same then, sorry!

Hum..... Seems to apply to Defenders only?
In my case, the lights where actually flashing on the Disco (not just the noise). I was able to reset them by cycling the ignition on-off. The weird part is that at one point, they started flashing while I was driving. Also, a few days later, the light would not flash anymore after I disengage (or engage?) the alarm. Now, without changing anything, everything is back to normal...... :-( I hate chasing ghosts! :-(

Thanks for sharing though! That means that there could be a similar problem on mine.
By the way, looks like you will need to stop by the DLR to get the alarm ECU (and/or remotes) reprogrammed.... Good luck with that! ;-)
