Turbo questions 200tdi

Can I take the hot side of a 200tdi disco turbo and put that housing on a defender top Mount turbo?

I'd like to have the larger exhaust output so making a custom downpipe would be easier.

I'm worried about the orientation of the waste gate assembly on the disco side and I don't want to rotate the center section of the defender turbo (to preserve the oil feed and drain.

While I have never had hands on these particular parts I do have a lot of turbo experience. Can the backhousing (and compressor cover) not be rotated independently of the position of the center section? I've never had one where you can't loosen the bolts and rotate them all however you want (drain pointing down)

If the exhaust wheel is the same it should just go on.

Yes, the compressor and turbine housings can be rotated. It is a normal Garret turbo.

Matthew, it's not too hard to rotate the compressor housing and just drill and tap to put the wastegate actuator back where it needs to be. That way, even if you are using the disco hot side housing you can still get the compressor to point the right way to keep your engine bay stock looking. I'm pretty sure that the four bolt turbo-to-manifold flange of the Disco turbo will indeed bolt up to the defender manifold. I'm not sure where that puts the oil feed and drain openings, but the cartridge will rotate to get them back vertical. If it works that is a pretty good idea as it will make it much easier to fab a custom downpipe that uses the 3-bolt flange instead of the funk one that's on the defender turbos.

I've been going over this for a few days now and will Probably move to a aftermarket turbo.

Most likely a garrett GT2554r or something of similar size. I want roller bearing, common chra and a output flange that I can make the downpipe for.

Issue is my defender turbine exhaust housing is cracked under the waste gate from Dr. AAaron being a fucking fool and me not knowing any better early on.

did you ever buy a GT2554R? It really seems like it should be the single most straightforward turbo upgrade for the 200tdi (it looks the 5-bolt version is literally drop-in), and it's not expensive at all compared to the alternatives!!

I didn't, after I went to 3in exhaust and a cone filter the gains were significant. That being said, when I get some coin together I may in the future but after researching there are better alternatives. Namely a hybrid roller bearing unit with a t2/25 exhaust inlet and a vband hotside output with variable vanes. This is the real Holy grail but has to come from a custom shop like darkside turbos in the UK.

After my frame swap I'll probably have time to mess around with it

How much does that cost? I think the genuine Garrett GT2554R is only $900, which is a bargain if you think about it?

About 1500 but you save on the vband adapter and don't have to worry about the hot side exhaust port being tiny. For my setup with a 3in turbo back exhaust its ideal.
