Tuffy Box lock question

Not sure what happened to the lock, but the female portion that accepts the key is halfway between the two keyed opening sights (the open and locked posistion). The key will not go in obviously and cannot rotate back to either posistion. Not sure, but think someone tried to get in the box as I had the battery disconnected as I had left it outside and was gone for a week. (little did they know the cutoff is under the seat).
Does anyone know how to fix this or is a locksmith the best alternative? The box is locked tight and cannot get into it.
Thanks,
Keith

Maybe try a large prybar or screwdriver to move it back to the locked position, then try the key again?

I have a laundromat with similar locks on all my machines. The locks seem to magically turn a little all the time and the nub on the key will prevent you putting the key in the hole. The previous owner ground the nub off the edge of the key so it fits down into the female portion of the lock and then you can turn the lock. The keyed part is on the round part of the key. That nub is not necessary.
