Troubleshooting my winch electrics

I have an older Titan 12k winch (http://titanwinches.com/index.php/tw...0lb-winch.html). The last time I tried to use it, the winch worked until it got a load on it. Then it just stopped. I've done as much internet research as I can and have gone out with my ammeter and I'm still not sure where the problem is.

The symptoms are the same whether I try to spool in or out. I'll either get a single solenoid click when I press a button (and a click when I release it), or I'll get no sound at all. It seem sort of random which response I'll get. I'll get one for a few minutes, then I'll try again and get nothing, and so forth.

I'm getting a steady 12.5V or so across the terminals when I'm not using the winch. I have dual batteries, and I performed these tests with the engine running.

I'm getting almost not voltage through to either of the positive terminals into the winch motor. If I step my ammeter down, it seems like I get about 0.002 volts coming through when I press a button, so it seems like something's connecting in the solenoid box, but just not enough to make anything happen.

I have tightened up everything I can reach, but there is a ground coming out of the bottom of the winch that I'd have to remove the winch to get. I also haven't tightened the ground where it reaches the chassis, or I suppose the battery terminals.

I then had the bright (?) idea to jump a connection from the main positive into the solenoid over to one of the positive leads on the winch battery. Nothing happened. I then realized my winch wasn't in gear, so engaged that and tried again. I got a huge spark for a moment, until I quickly took the cable off. After that I once again got nothing, even after I tested the solenoid and it was clicking again.

Does anyone know where I should look next? I don't mind buying a new solenoid, but I'm just not convinced that's the problem due to the fact that I get an identical response whether I'm trying to spool in or out. I suppose it could be a bad ground somewhere even though I'm showing normal voltage.

Finally, I did get the winch to spool out momentarily this evening, but when I tried to winch back, I got only a click. Then neither direction worked again for the remainder of my testing.

Thanks,
- Andrew.

Try by passing the solenoids and go straight to the motor. You could have a bad solenoid.

I thought that's what I did by jumping from the positive input to the positive lead into the motor. No?
