trimming fuel tank

As a result of some rear cross member repair, I now have a slight clearance issue in fitting the fuel tank. My question is can I trim the mounting "tabs" for the tank where the upper an lower sandwich together, marked on the attached pic in order to shorten the overall tank length without compromising the integrity of the tank? I know that I can use a few spacers to lower the tank by an inch or so, but my preference would be to have it in the original location. Thoughts?

If you look closely you will be able to see the line aroind the tank whee it is crimp welded together.. As long as you don't go through that line you shouldn't have a problem.. I had to carry out the same modification on mine too.. And I've beat the snot out of my truck for years without a problem..

Thanks Shayne. Always good to know that someone has been here before with good results.
