Transfercase noise

So after I finished up doing some work on the front end I put the tire back on the right front while it wsa still in the air and gave it a spin to hear the bearing. I heard a ratchiting sound comming from the t-case. So I started spinning the front drive shaft (diff lock not engaged) and I hear and feel a distinct ratchiting type noise and it feels like it tightnings up and then goes free as I turn it. There is some play in the u joints but not much, what is going on?

The truck is driving fine except for all the other problems

Follow-up Post:

OK so... I went back out to mess around with it and I engaged the center difflock then went to trun the drive shaft and it was locked (good). But when I disengaged the center diff lock I turned the front drive shaft again and the ratcheting sound was gone...totally smooth and no ratchiting. I'm sure there was a sound, It was loud and fron the transfer case.

Rover gremlins... or something to be concerned about??

FYI I was just changing bushings and tightning wheel bearings... nothin in the drive train.

The diff lock was probably not fully disengaged. Sometimes they stick.

I just changed the oil a week ago, but I'll do it again. It didn't look good but no major metal to speak of. Could a partially disengeged center diff make a ratchating sound??

There's a dog clutch in there I think so it could well do.
Why not drop the bottom cover plate an see what can be seen?
What did the oil look like?
Was there enough?
