transfer case . . . transfer

Any reason why the LT230 from a 2000 DII wouldn't be a drop in to my '83 110? the DII box is covered in plugs and harnesses, but I really can't think why just pulling them all wouldn't be fine. Thoughts?

2000 should have CDL/diff lock .. its the late 2001s, 2002s and 2003s that dont have it..

Mid 2001 - 2003 were missing CDL.

You will still want to make sure that the case has CDL since some were replaced under warranty with non CDL units.

This one appears to have the CDL -- apparently it was replaced due to a leaking input seal by the owner -- 75K on it. I honestly didn't realize that there could be that many electronics hooked up to a transfer case . . .

You need a DII front drive shaft or to switch out the flange.

Save the flange and then keep an eye open for a cheap / free DII front driveshaft that needs rebuilt

you can try asking at the dealership too.. they usually just replace the whole shaft under warranty and scrap the old ones..

Thanks I may take you up on that! I still need to find that data on the parts to rebuild the middle . . . cardon(?) piece. anyone have any experience here? The shaft in question needs ujoints (easy enough) but also needs the center pivot piece rebuilt.

precision 617 is the centering kit or Neapco 7-0081NG
the u-joint is precision 344 or pdq1 0005 or neapco 1-0005

This case has been procured -- what if any of the harnesses do I need to keep? I think this case has more wiring than the rest of the 110 in total!

Good call, thanks. Apparently it needs a new input seal -- while I'm at it, any suggestions for other seals to replace?

Thanks again!

Tony

It fits just fine- did it this summer when my transfer box went west whilst in Morocco. Limped to Southern Spain and changed it out foe a DII 1:1.211 ratio box. I ignored all the wires apart from the difflock light and it worked just fine, The ration was a little high compared to the 1:1.444 that was in there before.

Thanks Mike. When you say it was a little high, how would you discribe driving it with that ratio (I'm going from a 1:6)?

On the road from a 1.6 to a 1.2 you will notice it has less power when you take off but when you are on the highway your rpms will be lower and you will be able to obtain a higher top speed than with the 1.6

In low range you should not notice a diffrence since they have the same low range ratio.

Well on some really steep hills going up to Granada I was down into 3rd with my foot on the floor, but mostly it's good. I have to hang onto the lower gears a little longer, cruising is much more relaxed, 70 mph all day crossing France and Spain this summer. Its about an 18% increase over the 1.44. and about a 38% increase over the 1.666.My engine is standard. it pulls OK but I wouldn't want to try towing at the max stated weight of 3.5 tonnes with the 1.211 transfer box. The fuel consumption seems unchanged. at around 30mpg (imperial). I run 235/85R16 grneral TR's.
I'm surprised you haven't thrashed the 300 tdi to death running that ratio transfer box. What was your cruising speed?
The difference will be like chalk and cheese, you'll wonder how you lived with it before. Be careful though, you'll arrive at your first few corners 20 mph too fast.
