tranny issue

95 NAS D90, 41,000 orig miles. Orig R380 trans. Ok, So yesterday all was well, I ran out to a doc appointment and couldn't move the selector over to reverse. Got back on the road and 1-4 work fine, always was a good amount of positive feedback when changing gears, "toothy" feeling but no grinding or anything. Long story short, i can get into 5th and reverse but I have to firmly move the selector to get through the gate. Once in, it respond normally. Fluid was changed about 4 months ago to Redline synthetic. Fluid level is good. I'm guessing something on the top end but I am a true neophyte with regard to transmission assembly/reassembly. Any thoughts?
Thanks All!

I keep getting mixed up with LT77s, but I know it is in the top end somewhere.

I have been doing the latter since I was in my teens so nothing has changed.

Last R380 I did was near on a decade ago so even to remember anything is worth something. I swear I can still see how everything lines up in the pictures in my head but I don't have one of the top as I think I just checked it and it was fine.

I had same issue. Driving on highway, normal speed, kicked it out of gear and then would not take fifth; funny clunky sound..... got home on 4th and voila, no reverse. From what I read some king of shaft break.... nevertheless, smoked tranny..... swapped it with use I scored..... or you can have a rebuild for $2K...... sucks

Since he can get into 5th and reverse it is less likely that shaft broke, but that is a somewhat common issue with R380s. More likely is something like the reverse lock out.

synco issue. Mine did that. Tranny felt very cluncky and then slipped. Got home but woke up one morning and the gremlins had been at work - reverse would not engage and another gear (do not recall which but my original post is on the site somewhere). Rowed to the shop - looked at the tranny and it was a simple inexpensive fix. Very happy as I was already sourcing replacements.

did you get any go with yours? mine, reverse completely dead and 5th no go with ugly noises.... from all i read & spoke to suggested replace, which i did.... would suck if i didnt need to replace....

I initially misread initial post, didn't realize was a stuck issue.....

It's not a no go issue, 1st thru 4th run sweet. It's the move from 4th to 5th that's trouble. If I double clutch it should rule out a bad synchro which I've tried and it's still the same. In gonna go with Ron here but haven't had to open the top end of the transmission
