Touchscreen stereo install without cutting dash?

I'm interested in installing a stereo with a display for navigation and a back-up camera. But I don't want to cut the dash to install a MUD console. Have any of you done this? Here's a couple options I've thought of.

1) Use the stock LR dash single din radio mount and install a flip out screen head unit. But it's not horizontal so the screen wouldn't tilt up all the way. Would it work?
Like this one: Pioneer AVH-X7800BT DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com

2) Make a custom mount/enclosure for a single din head unit that has a fixed double din display.
Like this one: Alpine INE-W967HD Digital media navigation receiver (does not play CDs) at Crutchfield.com

Easy peasy! All of the single din flip-outs have adjustable angles. Mine is an old Eclipse.

Also, in reference to your second idea, there are single din head units with the double din screen fixed and favoring the lower area, thus better fitting the stock dash location. I'll try to find it for reference.

Hey thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. One thing though, is the stereo able to turn off and on without retracting the screen again? It would be nice if I could leave it up if it was parked at home.

Yeah, that Alpine is kinda spendy. But it looks like a nice one. The only issue I think would be making a custom mount for it.

It can be left up or kept down. Stereo works either way. Obviously GPS suffers without the screen up, but she still bitches at me!

Boy, there's a lot of crap out on the market. I just went looking for the single din double down screen and found tons of cheap no name units. This caught my eye for uniqueness in a single din. No internal GPS, but it could probably be added.

Don't forget to look also at clarion. I have one (NZ-503) in my RRC. Good unit.

i feel there has been such little innovation on the aftermarket stereo sector. With the current tech you could do some amazing things, but they don't.
Honestly all you need is blue tooth and your phone can do the rest.

You know that single din JVC KD-AVX77 is pretty cool. Too bad it's so old.

I had that unit in my RRC in 2010 or so and it felt like a dated operating system back then. Watching movies in the stretch mode was interesting. I can't imagine it would be bearable today.

Subscribed. I was doing my own research but was stuck on having Apple's CarPlay feature for the head unit.

I've decided I think a rear view mirror that has a display for the backup camera is a better option than installing a fancy stereo in the dash. Here's a few OEM models that have a compass and temp:

-Gentex 50-GENK3320S
-Rostra 250-8801
-Brandmotion 9002-9516

And here's a really cool one that has a full width display. It's in the 2016 Cadillac CT6 that comes out this month. It looks like it doesn't have a compass or temp though. Here's a GM parts site that lists it: Online Catalog | GM Wholesale Parts. To find it select the model, then to go “Electrical/Lighting” then “Switches/Modules/Controls/Sensors/Relays” then “Windshield Trim & Hardware”. It’s item 3 on the diagram. It shows no price yet (not yet available). Probably will be soon though. The camera is under “Electrical/Lighting” then “Rear Lighting/Bulbs” then “Rear Compartment Hardware.” It’s item 27 on the diagram. The camera is $443.95 list ($329.04 on this site).

Here's a couple videos about the new full display mirror. It's made by Gentex.

Watching that video made me want to have those full display mirrors on all of my vehicles. Wonder how much it's gonna end up costin' me....

It's hard to say. Apparently you can get one for free if it's for a car you're building to show. Apply For A Mirror — Gentex Type-R. They say it has a retail value of $2,500.

On the Cadillac CT6 it comes as part of an "Enhanced Vision and Comfort Package" for $2,025 that also includes the following:
-UltraView® panoramic power sunroof
-Ventilated driver and front passenger seats
-Heated rear outboard seats

In that first Gentex video they picture it installed in a new BMW X5, but I don't believe it's currently an option for that vehicle. I imagine it will be soon.
