Top Dead Center

I am putting the distributor back in and of course it will not start. Followed the instructions and am looking for some clarification.
Does the plug spark only on the Compression stroke? I have found comments that there is a wasted spark on the exhaust stroke.
Cylinder number one is drivers side front? Left hand drive.

It must be at TDC on the compression stroke. You can find that by removing #1 plug (left side front most) and covering the hole with your finger and having a friend blip the starter until you feel a rush of air. Then use a wrench on the crank bolt to move the engine to TDC.

I use the chopstix method. stick it in the spark plug hole until you feel the piston pushing it up, than just align the harmonic dampener to the timing pointer with socket wrench.
