To tailgate or not to tailgate

My wife let me buy a M416 trailer and I am planning out the restoration process. I am trying to decide on if putting in a tailgate is the right option. From other websites I am getting both opinions on tailgates. The purists are against chainging the design and everyone else hacks a tailgate in. I do have a neighbor that builds race cars so I think if I put a tailgate in he would help and it could be done right.

For the people here that have trailers:

Do you find the tailgate is a necesity?

Do you wish you had a tailagte?

Or does it really matter?

I do plan on putting in a spray on bedliner so if I do a tailgate it needs to be done first and there would be no going back once the bedliner is in.

My use will be for camping/hunting, hauling random items around and going to Pioneer for landscaping stuff once or twice a year.

Congrats.

I could see a tailgate being useful if you want to haul longer items in the bed (not on top of the rails). But unless you make it side hinged, it doesn't increase access any, so not sure you get any benefit otherwise.

Please post pictures!

I have had both. The M416 I had with the cut-out tailgate had weakened sides because the sides lost the rear support (and wouldn't float anymore!). I have an uncut one now and prefer it.
