to buy or not to buy: Bosch Injection Pump

Hello all, I have the opportunity (I guess techinically we all do) to get a used but in great condition Bosch VE IP at what I think is a great deal $250. it was used for training never put on a car. I don't know if this is a spare that I should have or not. my questions are:
1. how often does this fail? 2. meaning at this price is it worth it to have this spare one?

thanks
Chris

The VE pump on my 1985 BMW 524td is still going strong (27 years old 173K miles). Had to replace the body seals on it in 2005. Only difference in the LR pump vs the BMW is the head is 6 port vs 4 port on the LR.

I'd spend the $250 on, an extra alternator, starter, water pump, timing belt & idler bearings, stuff like that that commonly goes out but you can't get at NAPA but can ruin a trip if you don't have it.

The very uncommon radiator hose would be a good spare to have on hand too.

I already have all my spares including the Y shaped rad hose and thought this was a great deal I just don't know if it is something worth having around. It is 200/300 tdi specific and came off a training engine. It's just a tough decision as we are trying to save and I don't need it but if this was a part that typically goes out around 50-60,000 miles then I'd get it at this price

The VE pump on my 300tdi has been running for 10+ years and has 115K+ miles on it, no problems. Internally the VE pump has rotary moving components, nothing reciprocates, so it's very reliable in my experience. I've never had a VE fail and I've been using them continuously since 1981 in my 1st diesel VW Rabbit. Internally they are very simple, and if you ever need to, easy to work on.

So I decided to pass on this, the pump looks brand new and the seller is really good about communicating. I just can't justify it now. Good luck Naplm. here's the sellers contact info
