Titling Tdi in NJ?

Does anyone know if it is "legal" to register/ title a 2000 110 Tdi in New Jersey?

It wouldn't be legal in any of the 50 states. You need to search for and read the "What's Legal" thread.

I think he means a model year 2000 defender 110 with a Tdi motor. In any case it doesn't matter, as soon as you uttered "2000" it became illegal for the next 12 years.

It might be done but...... Do you have smog testing? They will not be able to look up specifications for the Td5 motor.

It's not legal to be in the country unless you have a very special set of circumstances so a title is the least of your problems.

Diesel is exempt after 7 or 8 years in NJ

The diesel is not your problem in as much as the year of the truck.

As others have said... It's not legal, but it has been done - a lot.

It is quite easy....fabricate or buy illegal VIN plates, illegaly grind off the VIN numbers on the chassis, and relace with illegal copies of the illegal chassis # on the VIN. Illegaly fabricate a bill of sale for the illegal VIN plate, then Illegaly forge someone's name and signature as the seller in England....or better yet go down the local pub and buy someone a few pints to write their name and sign the docs....

Then just bring it in via RORO or in a container (if it requires import - if already in the US skip import part)....then just take it to the NJ DOT and title and register it.

Oh I forgot - illegaly fill out the import docs, and declare that all you are saying is the truth so help you....or plead ignorance because someone else did it all

I HOPE YOU GET WHAT IT ENTAILS?

SIMPLE

Apologies ahead of time if this is a dumb quesions, but here goes....I've seen a few 10- 15 year old diesel 110s, 130s on this board- assuming gray market. Are these registered "correctly", or just lucky? Is the 2000 MY an issue, or all TDis?

Like I said on my post above, your first and immediate problem is the year.... Remember, the legal import rule is 25 years... Once you meet that, at least in NJ, it almost doesn't matter what kind of Diesel engine you have. For technicalities' sake, it has to be the engine originally spec'd for the truck, but since you're not subjected to inspection, it doesn't matter until you get into a major accident and questions start to be raised.

As an example, I registered and titled my ROW 1985 110 with 300 tdi and all they needed from me was the insurance and a picture of the VIN under the hood and the old title... That was it! I walked away with plates and I never have to see them again. . This was at the Oakland DMV. I heard from other members here that in Lodi they want to "etch" your VIN before registering.

Again, your biggest issue is the 2000 MY. There's no "legal" way around it IMHO. Good luck!
