Tithonus Thread

I'd like to start a thread concerning improvements/additions you guys have made to your Tithonus rigs. I did a quick forum search and for some reason I could see any of the pictures you guys posted in the registry threads.

Couple of questions:

How hard is it to remove the fiberglass top (2 man job)? Is it impossible to store once it's off due to the size?

Are there any after market soft tops that resemble the NAS OEM ST? I was thinking something like the STs on some of the "special" ECR 110s seen on Copley's site. Think Badger could do one up?

How hard would it be to install a forward facing seat vice the side seats?

Has anyone tried to soundproof the interior or is it a lost cause?

Also I'm assuming no AC or radio, has anyone explored trying to add those options? What about a Tuffy-like box?

Any other owner experiences or feedback would be great-especially things to look for when shopping besides the usual spots

Thanks again, looking forward to hearing from you all

A lot of that stuff isn't specific to Tithonus trucks and have been easily added in all types of defenders, like a forward facing bench seat. Good luck! If you're having trouble opening pics in the registries, try from a computer, as the mobile version has not been fixed. You can touch the thread at the top in mobile version and it'll open in desktop view.

I have done many of the things you have asked about. The tops are easily removed but requires 2 people because of the size. It store fine but is bulky. I used Dyna matt to do the whole cab and doors. Helped a lot. No AC but I installed a ruddy box with door cards to provide a stereo and a place for my speakers. I would ask Rivermike about his soft tops as there are like none that I have seen. If you have any questions please just pm me.

moved the thread.

Also chris snell had a good thread about his build - maybe PM him and ask him if he'd un-hide it. He doesn't like soft tops with windows, but there was a good thread about them here. Badger will build you anything, but you'd have to get the truck to him or know of one nearby he could use.

Soft top is exmoor purchased at RN. I lowered the roll cage about 2 inches by cutting and welding in place.

What dash unit is that? I've seen it before but can't remember the name.

I'll be taking off my hardtop this weekend - I'll document the process and see if I can help anyone else thinking about doing the same thing!

Its pretty straight forward. Once you undo the bolts above the door where the roll cage turns inside, lift the front section of cage up and forward as it pivots at the bottom of the windscreen. It sounds obvious now but we were about to undo those bolts too and there's no need!

Good luck.

Looks good! How long did it take? Obviously a two man job right?

It is really. You could probably do most of the bolts on your own but then you'd need a hand with the final stage. The rear door is easier to remove with 2 people too. In other news...I bought a TUM ECM cover on impulse and now I'm scratching my head how I might be able to adapt it to fit. It doesn't seem to secure in the usual way...

Thanks for the info and pics! I've seen soft tops for sale with additional hardware - is that a must for attaching a soft top, or can it be secured without it?

Tith soft tops need all the bits to secure it over the driver compartment and to the top of the front windscreen panel. What I need to fit the one in the photo though is anyone's guess.

Here's my contribution to the Tithonus thread. Mine is partially dismantled as all good Land Rovers should be.

Rover chrome is being applied to the roll bar and rear seat brackets and a few other things. Thus proving ,to a few certain people ,that I can in fact own a Defender without completely taking it apart to the frame.I view this as light maintenance ,not rebuilding.

More questions

Now that I've actually bought a Tith, couple of questions. The lights are obviously a lot different than regular Defenders. I was playing around with them the other night to see what all the switches do. When I switch it all the way to the left all the "normal" lights come on (back and front). But when I switch on the high beams, only the Left light goes bright and the Right headlight goes completely out. Without the high beams, both headlights work. Is this a Tith quirk or do I have a wiring problem?

I also want to eventually cut holes in the bumper to add fog lights and make it look like a '94 NAS bumper. How hard would this be to do (cutting/wiring, etc.)?

I've got some surface rust on a couple of places, what's the best way to stop it and eventually get rid of it?

I would like to move the tire to the rear, but don't want to spring for a new hood (yet). Any suggestions for cutting off the tire mounts on the existing hood?

Would like to freshen up any easy maintenance areas, could you guys make some suggestions? I'm thinking I need to check the timing belt, etc.

Anyone know where I can pick up the overhead ribs for the cage?

Last one, I'm interested in tracking down the history of what my truck was used for in the British military. Any idea of how to look into that?

Thanks

The tyre mount is just bolted to the underside on the bonnet, save all the bits you may one day find a use or somebody will want it.

I will dig out the info you need to get the history, is the M.O.D asset plate still fitted?

Re the headlights, you have a wiring problem (or perhaps just need to change the bulb?) They should work as normal once you switch to the left. BTW, if you find you lose your indicators/brake lights/horn then jiggle that central light switch before you do much else. You will probably find the aforementioned come back to life. (Not that you asked about that. Bonus random info...)

Is not a plate riveted to one side of the seat box? Maybe another tith owner can tell where it should be.
