Thoughts on buying a salvage/rebuilt NAS 90

Hey fellas. I'm brand new here and am wanting a Defender. I had an '84 ROW 90 and an '85 110 a couple of years ago and reluctantly sold them. I'm on the hunt for another
I've got a lead on a '97 NAS wagon. I've got pictures and a brief walk around inspection. I'm going to look at it on Monday. Everything looks good including a clear Texas Title. Here's the kicker - CarFax and Autocheck show previous salvage from Tennessee (5 previous owners). It could have been small to nothing or something bigger.
Anyway, if the truck is solid does it hurt having that on its record?
Thanks in advance.

if you list the vin and the plate numbers you will get a full run down on its history, some of the fellow forum members have the full history on NAS D's stored away in the hills of North Dakota.

Nice part of Texas you have there, trouble for us we have to go into the shit hole of Houston to get to ya'll

Some states will offer a clear title (Maryland for example I believe) even with a previous salvage title. Many here see Defenders as one of those vehicles that if the damage wasn't terrible from the salvage, and if it was repaired properly (especially fresh water flooding being a reason for salvage) they don't see salvage as an issue. That's all well and good, but when it comes time to sell it will still be a salvage vehicle. Ask any car dealer if they'd prefer a clear title (as in clear from the day it was originally sold) or a past with a salvage on it. Personally, I wouldn't want to take a salvage defender unless it was at a deep discount under what the regular market value is for a clear title. If they are asking the same $$ for a salvage title as most are asking for a clean one, then move on to a clean one. Are they asking $43k? That's a ton. I'd want to be in the teens or at the most in the 20s for a salvage defender, even if it's clean.

Thats exactly my thought about value (teens to 20s). Ironically he's asking $42,900. There's another '97 that's clean that I'll probably check out. Unfortunately it's in Houston, so I'll have to head to the big city.

Thanks for the offer. A friend is going down on Monday and he thinks he has time to go take a look. The one that caught my eye is at Dominion Carz. 97 wagon with 86k for $33k

Dominion cars on Shepard always seems to have a defender for sale. I have seen 3 or 4 over the past year or so.

Salvaged means half fair market value, in my opinion.

Below are pictures of the Clear TX title with salvage history on Carfax. I showed the two 90's I'm considering to my wife tonight and she loved the one with the iffy Carfax . Interesting tidbit - this truck is now headed to auction. A buddy of mine who is a dealer saw it on an upcoming run list and texted me about it late this afternoon. I guess the previous dealer realized $42,900 was a bit too high. I'm curious what he has in it and if it will sell.
BTW thanks for all the responses to my initial question.

Wow! Thanks for that info. I guess on this particular D90, having salvage issues doesn't matter with price.

Depends on local market I guess,
To me a branded title is worth a lot less than a clean one.

Best to consider an exit strategy for any purchase. As shown by these posts, many put a deep discount on a salvaged truck. Even paying north of $30k is too much IMO, no matter how clean.

I wouldn't do it unless it is a smoking deal. Search for this thread I started about a total loss on a CarFax and you can see the reaction it got.

AutoCheck/CarFax discrepancy?????

I believe that car is a lead generator for those guys. It has been on that website for months and months. I called them about 6 months ago on it and they said it sold but they would happily take my name and number. It's also been mentioned on this Board a time or two.

Y'all are thinking exactly the way I am. Unless its crazy cheap, it's not a good one. I keep telling myself I'll keep it forever & pass it down to my son, but since I can't predict the future - exit strategies are wise.
Thanks for the info on Dominion. I'm not fond of dealers that do that.
The search continues & if I hear how the auction goes on the salvaged one I'll pass along the info.
