Looking for people in Chicago to do a check up on my 200TDI that's arriving from Spain and maybe some light restoration work...

SRS light on the RRC needed to be reset for VA safety inspection, but apparently AMS doesn't have a Testbook anymore, so I crossed the river last Friday into Goose's Marylandistan to Independent in Bethesda. Dean was super nice and kind enough to give me a tour of the facilities and talk to me about the various projects they have. He didn't have the Testbook at that location, but said he could take care of me on Monday.

Dean took care of my SRS light in a matter of minutes, and told me to come back if it popped up again before the inspection. Very happy to say that the VA inspection is now behind me for another year, thanks to Dean.

As others have said before, Independent SPT in Bethesda is a great shop with experienced LR people, both heritage and new LRs. Very professional and courteous. If he ever shows up at the NoVA HH, I'm sure he'll be drinking gratis...

Also have to say that Overland 4X4 in Alexandria is another great place in the DMV area. John is incredibly knowledgeable as well. My friend down the street swears by his shop, but Overland is actually farther for us, though it is close to his office.

Do NOT take your Land Rover or any other car to AA Auto in Charleston. I took my new (to me) Defender 90 to them for an oil change and to install the 4 jump seats in the back. I had temporary prepositioned the seats in the back to where I assumed they went. Apparently they were placed in the wrong spot but, AA went ahead and installed the seats in this position without even talking to me. I would have never had them install seats in the wrong place. Get real. I'm a novice at best when it comes to this car. They initially wanted $200 to install the 4 seats, working at $100 an hour. I was told that not just anyone can install these seats so I felt comfortable with them doing so and we agreed on $150.
Well, when I got home I found out that the seat backs we not screwed in (apparently I told them I wanted to install those which makes NO sense) and the seat bottoms were installed incorrectly. The support on the jump seat does not support the seat when its down. Why a company would ever install something that is incorrect is beyond me. I paid them to install the seats correctly and they failed miserably to do so.
I then took the truck back for them to fix the seats thinking they would make it right. After talking to them on the phone (it'll only take a couple hrs to fix)...4 days later I got a call saying that they installed the seats how I wanted them. Why would I want seats installed incorrectly?
Now to fix the situation Brian wants 4-5 hours to make it right, meaning $400-$500. Who is he kidding? This place is a joke. I even have sent them other Defender 90's in the past and this is the level of the customer service that they provide. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. I read the other reviews of this place and figured I'd give them a shot. I should have stuck with my gut and taken the other negative reviews seriously that I've read. There's a reason why our friend in common doesn't bring his truck to you anymore either.
Lots of thanks for nothing. Act like you care about your customers next time before you install something incorrectly.

Anyone know a place near St. Louis, MO that would have knowledge of 200tdi or 300tdi engines? The only Defender trucks I have ever seen in the area are NAS, and any shop within 10 miles of my house doesn't even know what a Defender is.

Try Independant in Bethesda, MD. Go to the second location off of River Rd., it's kinda hidden, but it's behind the Audi dealers service. Dean's a great guy, and he has some great people.

not much near stafford in regards to rover repairs, independent or dealer.
until 5 yrs ago I was in catlett, va. I was the indie link between north and south Va.

Best of luck. specially with a vintage rover.
Carlos.

Carlos isn't exaggerating...when I got back last summer and my D1 had an exhaust leak and one of her axles was leaking on the inside I had a local shop tell me they'd do the exhaust but didn't want to touch the axles 'b/c they were too complicated.'

I told them fear not, I could easily take care of the axle leak myself with the tools that were in the truck as soon as my jackstands got out of storage. Ultimately ended up doing just that, at this point I don't trust most mechanics to do much on her anyway.

Anyone have knowledge of British 4x4 in Springfield? They are a bit closer. Looks like newer stuff online but perhaps they'd be willing to pull apart the Sals (I assume its a Sals rear axle).

Will keep an eye out. I have tools and experience (old rovers give one that, whether wanted or not), but not really time at present.

Will get some time at the auto hobby shop on base.

Not pouring oil, just very wet under there where it shouldn't be wet.

Thanks to Peter, Carlos and Ray for the info.

Cheers,
Mark

Sounds like we should have a wrenching party. I didn't see that you were in Stafford. You are kinda in the middle of a dead zone. There are a couple of places in Richmond as well.

Been around for some 5 yrs or so, not until recently have they begun massive advertising, don't really know much about them other than I knew the owner when he was in diapers, his mom runs and owns top line jaguar.
don't know anyone who has used them thus can't comment on their abilities.

Carlos.

10 mins south of Leesburg is Loudoun Rovers. Call Walid at 703-627-6594. At any given day, he has ~ 10 Defenders out front.

Aside from doing it on base, if there was a desire to do it in a location where we can drink beer...I do have a two car garage out in the country as you push out 610.

I'm amenable to whatever, happy to lend a hand.

It's been a while since there was 'church' @ Chips, but you are closer than Richmond...

Any (and I mean ANY) recommendations for the Southeast? Anywhere at all in LA, TN, MS, AL (even GA)? I'd like to find someone that actually knows old Defenders and am happy to haul or drive there for major work if it is within a days drive.

If you aren't in a rush there's an independent Rover shop 2 miles from me and about a 3.5 hr drive from you.

ymmv- sometimes work takes longer than promised, but not excessive.

Roadside Werx Denver

Has anyone heard of or worked with Matt Gaum at Roadside Werx in Englewood CO? Looks like a mechanic that is specializing in diesel conversions/service.

If you don't want to comment on the thread, feel free to PM. I'd appreciate any positive or negative feedback.

Thanks,
Alex
