Temperature gauge fogging up

I have noticed that while driving the temperature gauge on my 97 has been fogging up lately ,and it never did it the previous 3 years of living in Florida....we are in Maine for the summer and it is alot cooler at the coast does that have anything to do with it?
moisture evaporates within an hour after the Defender parked and engine off
thanks
