TD5 starting problem related to fuel level

Hi all,

I have a 2000 defender td5 having the following problem. When its full, no problem what so ever, perfect starting cold and hot and runs like a breeze. But, whenever the fuel level is less than full it becomes difficult to get it started, and when its around 1/4 its almost impossible to start. Removed the fuel pump and and looked for any crack in the hoses, didn't find any.

Any one familiar with such a problem or suggestions?

Thanks,
Omar

Has the fuel pump been whining and it really no longer does. Also you should test the fuel pump with a test light. Read up on this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=54796

only whining when fuel is less than full, sounds like air cavitation. When full no whining at all and works perfectly.

There's an insert within the fuel filter, to purge air from the line. Try running the normal fuel maintenance before you start it a few times.... Turn ignition to position II, step on the pedal five times. The td5 should go into a maintenance mode and purge the air. You'll hear a gurgling from the filter area.

If it starts consistently after the above, you'll need to change the insert in the fuel line... It's on the backside of the fuel filter housing.

I'd it still doesn't work, change the fuel pump.
