Tailight failure

My right tailight does not work when the brakes are applied. I replace the bulb cleaned the connections etc. Now it works but only when the lights are on and it does not brighten when I apply the breaks. Is my problem a worn out wiring harness? If so can I get a replacement at a local autoparts store or do I have to order them?

check your wiring harness to see the condition of it, try cleaning it out if you can. It may be very corroded and needing to be replaced. I just had to do one, I got the parts from rovers north ($18). It could also be a loose connection, you may want to take a look at the splices in the wiring to see if one is loose.

Check your grounds. It seems like a lot of 97's have that problem.

The tail light assemby plugs into the wiring harness (the bulb holder unplugs). If you unplug this connection, you will see that one of the three pins is broken due to corrosion. You will need to replace this connector/bulb holder. When you replace this connection, fill the female end with silicone to prevent this again.

I already checked the connections all three prongs are intact and the connections look pretty clean.

I have exact same problem, tail light works and blinker works, but brake light does not work on right side.

Is it only the right side or all the brake lights?

Set something on the break peddle and play with the bulb to see if you can get it to come one, I have to do this sometimes when replacing bulbs to get everything lined up just right.

I had a similar problem & it turned out to be a bad ground wire. The ground was enough to light the bulbs while running only, but braking pulled too much current and they wouldn't come on.
