Tach went out?

My tach suddenly quit on me and because my speedo has been out for a while I now have no instrumentation. Feel a bit naked. Do the tachs often go out or is it possibly a connection?
Thanks

Might just be as simple as a connection. Haven't heard of them going out just with age.

I guess I'll do some dash exploration today. The odd thing is it was not working when I got it back from the shop from having my ARB and winch installed. I cannot see a connection though?

Tach is completely dead? Intermittent death/function commonly means an alternator needs to be replaced ASAP.

Yes, plain dead.

------ Follow up post added December 11th, 2011 08:57 AM ------

Funny though I was just worried about my alternator because the new Optima battery I put in Oct has been going dead. But had it checked yesterday and it was a bad battery.

With the engine running, a voltage meter should be reading 13.7 volts or greater. If the reading is in the 12.5 range it won't be able to charge the battery high enough and could lead to your battery's death. Does your alt light glow ever so slightly? You may not even notice it unless it's dark. Mine glows ever so slightly, and is noticeable at night with the engine at an idle, with no loads on. I have my spare alt in hand for when mine does fail.

See if the white tach wire is still firmly attached to the alternator.

I have been wrong in the past, but connection issues aside, it all points to alternator -- dead battery, dead tach etc.

Just a follow up. Ordered a new alternator and noticed when installing it that a lead was not connected to the old one. It was the tach. Decided to replace the alt anyway as it had the remains of 12 year old Tennessee mud all over it and I had nothing else to do. Must have needed it as it seems the old one was making noise that I wasn't noticing. Purring like a kitten now.
