Tach goes to zero...

...engine is still running...
...it hesitates some...

Could it be anything other than my alternator?

Many thanks.

Nope.... Engine will run a while just on the battery....
Measure voltage at battery, if 13V+, then that's not the alternator. But.... I'd bet a lot on the alternator going south.

Could it be your serpentine belt tension pulley?

May be first sign of the alternator getting ready to fail.

Mine was doing that, and acting very erratic other times.

Based on a suggestion given to me, I moved my plug wires which were to close to the back of the alt, and fixed it. Bad wires on my rig. that said, some people also haev cured it by cleaning the attachment points on the alternator as well. apparently if it is slightly corroded you get the same effect.

Of course, probably your alternator on last breath Fortunately mine was bad wires and connections.

Usually I see this as a bad connection on the white/slate wire on the back of the alternator, especially on the diesels, due to vibration. As said in previous post, clean and check the wire on the back of the alt. before you do anything costly.

Could it be the pick up on the coil? I am not sure if the 4.6 had a coil or coil packs. If it has a coil, I would run some sand paper over the connections on both the positive and negavit sides. If it has coil packs and the engine is hesitating you may want to check the grounds on the coil packs.
