Tach dies when lights are on

Just picked up a 95 SW and notice that the tach dies as soon as I switch the lights on. I certainly wouldn't mind the luxury of having both a working tach AND lights, but I'm fully aware that these kinds of cars come with their own personality ...

But it would be nice to fix - any thoughts?

(Oddly enough I had a similar thing happen on my race car recently, but that was after the incorrect installation of an AFR gauge. The Defender does not have aux lights, or anything that I can see that would otherwise affect the tach output).

Check your alternator - could be the regulator that is attached to it(alternator problems affect tach)

Might be a dash wiring thing. Tach wire is a white wire coming off the coil. Check that it is firmly attached there. If so then you perhaps have a short someplace that only happens with the lights on. A look behind may be in order.

Good opportunity to wire your headlights through a relay while you are at it.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

Thanks - I'm installing a new window channel kit later this week, so I think a look behind the dash just got added to the list.
