t/c only works with diff lock engaged.

I've been messing with the t/c shifter and I can't get it put back together right. I can get it to go in diff lock high and low, but can't get it in unlocked low or high. We've been messing with it for 2 days and can't figure out what were doing wrong?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you probably have the linkage too far over. where are actually 3 "clicks" on the little knob on the TC. The 2nd click to the passenger side is lock as well as the 3rd click to the passenger side. So I would click it all the way unlocked (to the driver side) while under the truck and then push the TC arm out more and get it all lined up so that the unlock is set. Then see if the throw hits on the 2nd click to the passenger side. I had a hard time with this too because I kept thinking the 3 clicks where unlock - neutral - lock or the middle click was empty and needed to bypass that click to get to the third.

Could the fact that I have the front drive shaft out of the truck keep the t/c from shifting into the diff unlocked position?
As it is, I only have locked and neutral.
and I can see the front drive shaft flange spinning(no shaft installed) when the truck is stationary.

If the front driveshaft is spinning and you are not moving, it is unlocked.

I'm not really sure I understand what you are saying is wrong.

There is no "neutral" position when going from lock to unlock. There are two positions only. Neutral is in the gear shifting (moving lever front to back).

It's seems to be spinning even when the trannys in neutral?

Will the truck move with t/c in ulockd position without the Frt drive shaft in place?

No the truck will not move with a drive shaft missing or a broken axle shaft and the tcase in unlocked.

Great, thanks.
That makes sense now, took me 3 days to even think this might be the problem.
I am an idiot, I have to apologize to the poor student who was trying to figure it out all last week.
