Synthetic winch rope

Hello,

The Warn XD 9000i winch in my Defender has synthetic winch rope installed and since it was already there when I purchased the vehicle I do not know how old it is.
The rope has lost its colour (looks like it was some knind of reen or blue when new) and comes out flat and quite distorted when I pull it out. Although it has few very small "scratches" it looks lie it does not ave any serious failures. I have not used synthetic winch ropes before (I used wire instead) and therefore would like to know if it is normal that the ropes gets deformed and flattenede as mine does and if there are any other particular indications to diagnose if it is already time to change the rope or not. How long do they last if taken care properly?

I've measured the rope and it is about 1.2 mm in diametre whch sounds like a 7/16 rope, mor ethan enough for this winch if I am not wrong (5/16 wire comes standard with this winch).
I will post a picture later.

Thanks for our help!

Regards,
Santiago

Santiago,

The synthetic rope is probably Amsteel Blue Brand. The rope will flatten out and disform when it has been used or wound and rewound on the spool. You should be able to fix this by unspooling the line, and respooling it back on, under pressure (i.e winching the truck to a tree) then you can control where and how the line goes back on.

As for the color, more than likely it has been sitting out in the sun. You could cover the winch and rope to protectit from further damage. Is it only the first few feet that are discolored?

There is a fool proof test to tell whether or not you should replace it. Use it, and if it snaps, replace it.

Hi guys,

Scott, it is discoloured all over, but much more towards the end. It looks like the original colour was light green(?).
I will add a couple of pics to illustrate better and see what you think (attached).

Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Santiago

That rope is fine, the fibers just get compressed together on a heavy pull. If you work it loose with your fingers it will seperate and round out again. It looks better than my 1 year old line.

I guess you won't know what a bad one looks like until it snaps and then all sorts of descriptive words abound.
