Swing Away Rear Tire Stop / Preventer

I have a swing away rear tire carrier setup on my '84 ROW D-90. It is a Bearmach and is very much like a Mantec. It was designed to be set up with a station wagon door and opened with the door, thereby controlling it from swinging to far open, preventing the tire from smashing the rear light. I have since added a soft top with a drop down tailgate. Clearly, the swing away can no longer move with a drop down tailgate. I modified the swing away carrier with a trailer pull pin at the point where the carrier meets the tailgate. Now, I pull the pin, swing the tire away and out of the way from the tailgate and then I drop the tailgate. The concern I have is that the tire may smash my rear tail light if I am not careful. I open the tire carrier and it rests on the light. One day I am sure I will forget and it will no doubt smash the light. My old "Jeep" used to have a stop on the rear corner near the tail light to prevent this type of mishap. Has anyone here fabricated anything like this type of preventer or stop? Thanks in advance for the advice.
