ST is a Soft Top
SW is a Station Wagon (non-removable hard top)

An SW is a station wagon, it features an aluminum (aluminium?) top that, much like other things made of metal, is durable and impermeable by water.

ST stands for Soft Top, which has a large roll cage with a vinyl or canvas top stretched around it. It provides some measure of weather protection but is obviously less secure than a wagon.

To add to the discussion-

You can take off the hardtop on a SW but it takes a little bit of time. And you won't have the rollcage underneath unless you have one fabbed.

AND--- there is a fiberglass "hardtop" for the ST which fits over the rollcage. If you're looking at a D90 and it has a fiberglass black hard top but the body is another color (and there's a rollcage underneath) then it's a ST.

That might have confused things...drat
