Question Supercharger

What are your opinions on 3.9L's with superchargers? I believe Rimmer makes a SC for a 3.9/4.0L...

Having owned a D90 with a Rimmer supercharger, my opinion is that the SC gives the engine the power it should have come from the factory with.
I was very happy with it and never had one problem. It was installed by the previous owner when the D90 was newer and sold with my D90 when the vehicle had around 80K miles. AFAIK it's still going strong - Christian can you confirm?

A good friend of mine has had a Rimmer SC on his '95 RRC for over 100K miles with no problems whatsoever.

I've heard all the horror stories from the naysayers but I think they are mostly spouting second-hand experience and hearsay as I've never personally known an owner who installed one and had issues. I'm sure they're out there and will chime in now that I said that.

Rimmer has long since stopped producing the units so they are hard to come by and now most 3.9 & 4.0 Rover engines are getting pretty old. I think replacing the engine with a rebuilt 4.6 is a much more viable option.
Whoever said "there is no replacement for displacement" was probably right.

Best of luck,
Art Vigil

Jorge has one in his 97... i think its has over 90k on it and runs strong and like a top. It has enough power to run 36" tires and stock gears like nothing. Oh... and 90mph...

There was a guy in Cleveland, Oh selling one earlier this year. I think I still have his contact info, but he was asking around $3500. At that price point, I think a 4.6 would be a smarter purchase.

I have a Rimmer on my 97 and have been happy with the power. As for finding one I can give this opinion; A couple of months ago, you could have had the damned thing. I sent it to a company in CA for a rebuild due to some strange rattling noises inside the SC. It took a long time to get the SC back, then the company forgot to send the accuator... It was really nothing short of a horrible experience. Part of the delay was some of the interior parts are no longer made and had to be machined. Parts are nil on the older models. I didn't get into specifics with the company but the salesman made it sound like they have options on getting new SC for a 4.0 but it is $$$. You could put a new 4.6 in for maybe a little more.

Just my opinion. By the way, after the rebuild I feel like I am driving a sports car. It runs that good!

I almost bought one, would still like one if one comes available. I figure 4.6 + blower would be great. The ones I have seen at the dealer were hit or miss. Some ran like crap, some were fine. GEMS tended to be the issue ridden ones.

I had one. I didn't see the purpose. I basically gave it away in exchange for bringing my truck back to stock.
