Stuck U joint circlips

Gosh, I hate them. Anyone have a black majik trick to get them out?

Circlip pliers.

Not sure what you are doing to make it difficult.

Me? I'm only trying to make them surrender a sloppy U-joint

Two of them worked as expected. But the other two...
Broke two circlip plier tips yesterday, and them clips did not budge. Don't look rusted, or anything, but they simply refuse to give in.

BTW, isn't that "normal" (as in Rover-normal) for you? Every time I've changed a LR U-joint it has been an ordeal to get them out.

are you giving them a smack with a hammer and appropriately sized socket before trying to remove?

Yes, hammer the caps inwards to make sure there is no pressure on the clip and give a spray of penetrating oil.

No, Rover joints have been the same to change as any other. They are just regular Spicer U-joints.

I have had good luck with a small punch to get them started. Put it in the part where the circlip plairs would go and give it a couple taps with a hammer.

stick the joint in a vise with a socket on top of one circlip and clamp until there is no pressure on it (as mentioned). should come right out.

Caps pressured inside at no avail. Will try the punch after work and report accordingly.

Thanks, guys!

Once you hit the cap with a socket.....get a bigger socket that just fits the cir-clip and smack that too! it seems to break the funk loose.
