Struck out trying to fix door lock

Be of my door locks (lift up series/NAS) style has despite all the fiddling I've done never unlatched easily.
It's "tight" and only unlatches on the last inch or so of movement and then takes a bunch of force to unlatch The inside lever isn't much better.
Suggestions welcome.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

Hmm. They are new, but now I want to check them to see if there is potential for improvement there
