Strange Warning Light

I searched the forum and found this post by a member who hasn't been active in over two years. There was never a response with a solution, and now I have the exact same problem:

"The other day I came home after it had rained a fair amount (I actually washed my truck) and there is an ongoing clicking sound in the truck now. The warning light for what looks like a rear windshield defroster lights up alongside a wierd clicking sound (electric shorting or something). Oddly enough it only starts making the noise when I open the door or move the truck at all. Any ideas? I think it must be electrical. The clicking sound is coming from the console area, anywhere from the Fuse Compartment to the gear box. "

Anyone know what causes this and how to fix? Thanks.

sounds to me like the relay to the rear window heater got wet, and sloshing water in something causes it to heat up and trip.

no the clicking problem has to do with the anti theft system I had the same problem and researched it.
see the attached below....

Antitheft System - Dash Area Clicking Noise

No:

86/03/98/NAS

Ref:

WSM Section 86

Issue:

1

Date:

07/17/98

Clicking in 10AS Control Unit

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

DEFENDER (LD) VA992105 to VA999484

VA100300 to VA126471

SITUATION:

INTERMITTENT CLICKING NOISE FROM DASHBOARD

An intermittent clicking noise may be heard coming from the dashboard on some '97 model year Defenders. The clicking noise sounds very similar to a turn signal flasher in frequency and loudness. Once the clicking noise begins, it will continue until the ignition switch is cycled off and then on again. The source of the clicking noise is a relay within the immobilization control unit (10AS unit). A revised unit is now available to address this symptom.

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE IMMOBILIZATION UNIT

To address a customer complaint matching the above description, verify that the source of the clicking noise is the alarm ECU and replace the unit with the latest type.

PARTS INFORMATION:

AMR6430A Immobilization Unit

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

86.77.01 Time 0.70 hrs.

Replace 10AS ECU

FAULT CODE: Z

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

REPLACE IMMOBILIZATION (ALARM) CONTROL UNIT

1.

Refer to the procedure in Workshop Manual Section 86, Page 16, Operation 86.77.01.

2.

Remove the 10AS unit from the vehicle.

3.

Install the new 10AS (AMR6430A) and initialize with TestBook.

Wow...I had no clue the truck even had any type of anti-theft system (other than the Alpine alarm I had installed). Donald, did your rear window defroster light illuminate when you had the problem? How much did it cost to replace the alarm control unit?

I have a soft top so no rear defroster Actually I never had the issue resolved. The clicking happened one time after getting caught in the rain and never happened agaian. I drive with the surrey top on now so avoid most rainy days. Apparently it has to do with a part getting wet. It isn't a big deal I don't think just annoying but you can stop the click by turning on/off ignition

As you can see in the information Land Rover was/is aware of the problem.

good luck
