Strange one... temp and charging

Just got back from a great 10 days in Baja. Great trip but had a little issue with the temp gauge.

The VDO gauge is reading artificially hot. This only occurs when I have ran the house battery low after camping for a few days. I know this because when (with engine running) the voltage on the house battery is <13v it runs 'hot', after the battery is fully charged (when running ~13.8v) the temp gauge functions properly.
The gauge is well grounded, and I have been checking the actual temp with an IR heat gun.

Odd thing is the gauge is not attached to the house battery, it draws power from the starting battery (which seems to be in good shape). I do have a hellroaring isolator, and the house battery is not in good shape.

Is it possible the isolator is taking a dump?
Splitting the charge wrong and somehow making the ground funky?

Any suggestions are very welcome...

Make a new ground wire from the engine to the bulkhead.
