Stiff brakes

So...yet another problem. While in Baja my brake line decided to re-orient it self against the tire and wear a whole in it. No biggie, replaced the line (EE stainless) but now the braked are stiff...really stiff. I have bled about 2 liters of fluid with the power bleeder and the pedle is still stiff.

So I'm begining to suspect the booster or vacuum pump. I tried to do the start up bit with my foot on the pedal and the pedal didn't feel any softer with the engine running. I cant find anything wrong with the lines.

What is the best way to troubleshoot the booster/vacuum system.

all I want is a working defender again!!

Thanks in advance

Had that happen to me in an ambulance and it was the vacuum line.

Hopefully it is just the line... I have to go out and buy one of those testers. After I got rid of my diesel mercedes I gave the vaccum tester away with the car. That thing was a vacuum nightmare.

Does anyone know what the vaccume pump on a tdi is supposed to be pulling?

Can't help with that but I can tell you an inexpensive way to check all the vacuum lines and fittings. For gasoline engines use carb cleaner, for desiels use starting fluid. Spray it at each join with the engine running. If the engine changes rpm, you found a leak. Works every single time.
It sounds to me like the vacuum line or booster. If you have preasure the master cylinder is good. Only other thing I can think of would be the distribution valve but those very very seldom have issues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Scott. I have used that method (butane) on other cars but I'm not sure if it will work on the tdi because the vacuum dosn't control idle... or does it... I need to do some home work

Steve,
I am not sure. With the desiel, I was going by what I had been told, not direct knowledge. I know it works well with gas but....

Let me know just for my info if you would.
