stereo advice

So there's the speakers and wiring for the stereo in my truck, but the PO kept the head unit. It having been a lot of years since I bought a stereo, I have no idea what to look for. I do know that I would like a plug to be able to plug in my iphone for music and FM -- other than that the only other thing it needs to be is cheap.

Is crutchfield still a good bet? Any particular brands better than others?

I have an alpine with Ipod connection. Works good and can be had for about $250 online.

If you have an iPhone, forget the head unit and get a marine amp/iphone setup. Listen to radio stations on tune in radio and use the iPod for the rest.

Do the little headphone plugs on the front of head units (that you plug your iphone in to) work better than the hatefully bad tape deck adapter thingies?

I seriously hope you are not looking at head units with casette players. If you get a decent Alipine or Pioneer unit, you'll have full USB integration for your blackberry, Droid, iPhone/iPod/Pad, etc. and you can use the headphone jack for an mp3 player or anything else that is not compatible with your USB integration.

Here's mine.

No, my daily beater has a tape deck with a cassette ipod adaptor thing (that's permanently stuck in the tape deck, but that's another problem). Just wondering if the technology has evolved beyond that. Yes, I'm a complete luddite.

One word of advice (because I went though it last week): I replaced the existing head unit in my newly acquired 90 from an old Alpine, to a new Alpine from... Best Buy. Really long story slightly less long... new the unit is $109. They price matched to $79. Had it installed with one major problem for me: I use my iphone instead of CD's (ipod), and streaming services like Pandora, Slacker, and Spotify (instead of Sirius or XM). The Alpine I purchased could only play the ipod portion of the phone through the USB; when any other audio from the iphone was selected, radio went silent. Also, the ipod had to be controlled via the head unit (mildly dangerous & very annoying). I was described a different scenario from Best Buy, so we swapped it with a $120 Kenwood that not only can handle all of the streaming programs on my iphone, but can also be set so that you can control the ipod from the iphone as well. Now, no more looking at my leg to change the music.

I know that these are the bottom of the barrel for head units, so the more expensive units may be different. Just trying to save you the day I wasted sorting everything out. Hope this helps!

-Aaron

The stereo you want is the Alpine IDAx-305SBT. This unit has the USB in the rear so you can get a dock and just drop your phone or ipod in but the kicker is it also has built in bluetooth so you dont have to plug it in if you dont want to( the sound quality is much better if you do). It has all the streaming capabilities and will control your phone or ipod from the unit. It does not have a CD player but you can plug a changer into it if you want to. I am putting this in my 110 right now with the Alpine PDX 5 channel amp with 4 C5 JL audio component speakers and one 8" JL sub. The quality of the units that you plug into the front with a double male headphone cord sucks, you will be bummed out if you go that rout. I found the head unit on ebay for 225 and the amp for 260 which was a steal. Whatever you do get make sure it has the USB plug either in the front or rear, it is the only way to go. Good luck

HD radio, even if you never use it now...

After picking up my 90 from Aaron, I stopped at best buy (still not a fan of the company overall, but I didn't want to do the 7 hour drive back music-less) and picked up a JVC cd/HD/usb/headphone-in radio for ~$100. Installed it in the parking lot in about 15 min and have been happy with it ever since. Honestly the HD radio feature is pretty nice, even in a loud as hell vehicle with only 4" speakers at my knees.

The ipod USB integration isn't half bad either.

I think is pretty close to mine -> http://www.google.com/products/catal...ed=0CG8Q8wIwBA

Thanks, Danny. I'm in the same boat, don't want to drive back from Philly having only the voices to listen to . . .

my 1985 110 came with a Blaupunkt "Dublin" head unit (fitting as it was an Irish Rover) with tape deck. The only request from the wife is it must have Sirius receiver that's it . Just like we have at the Office and and my other truck . Cant imagine listening to FM, Tapes CD or Ipods ever again. way to much repetition in life than to have to hear it while driving " are we there yet" is painful enough from the little ones ;-) ....

Since radio is a wasteland, all I listen to is my iPhone (tracks, podcasts, pandora). So in the Hi-Cap, all I wanted was an amplifier with an aux-in. I found a POS Pyle head unit that has an SD card slot, USB interface, Aux-In and a crappy tuner. I think it was $50.
