Steering box question

In the continuing search to find the problem with my steering I have come across the next issue. At the connection between the steering box and the shaft from the steering wheel there is some play. It's not much but when the truck is off and you wiggle the steering wheel back and forth the shaft coming out of the steering box turns about an eighth to a quarter turn each way. I tightened the adjustment screw a little bit but it didn't seem to affect it. How much can you tighten the adjuster? I only went about a half a turn. Should I keep tightening it or is my box shot? What is the best solution here, rebuild or replace?

Thanks, Jason

Have you checked the splines on the box and the shaft? You can get a replacement re-manufactured box, with exchange, for less than $400.00 these days.

Jason-
I got a used steering box for my row rhd '84 d-90 from one of the guys on this site. I had him mail it to meridian for rebuilding. After I get it back and have it installed, my old box will be available for sale if you want it. I went this route instead of removing my current box and mailing it out for rebuilding because I use my truck every day and I didn't want to be without the defender while waiting for rebuild, shipping, etc. In fact, the guy I bought the box from did the same thing. If it helps, Let me know if you need the box. Its a 4 bolt box. I paid $100 plus $60 shipping to meridian and would be happy to do the same... not looking to turn a profit or anything... Just passing on the same cost I paid. Anyway, good luck.

Thanks Mike, I may take you up on the old box. I am going to take it to West coast British this week, I hope and see if he may have one that he can fix and exchange and what he will charge. Has anyone rebuilt one themselves, is it that difficult? I have looked at the blow up and there aren't that many parts inside there. I think I have seen rebuild kits for sale.
