It made a great fire ring!
When I first got my 110 it was on steel wheels. I got a set of alloys so the steel ones could be refinished. I never had an issue balancing the steel wheels. Of course I am running the skinny stock tires. Thanks for the hub tip.

I had a shop and we specialized on balancing on exotic and off road exotic. It is true that a steel wheel can have a larger run out than a alloy wheel. You will have a high spot in the wheel and a high spot in the tire. If both of these spots are together then you will get a hop in the fitment and an unbalanced tire. If you were to spin the tire 180 degrees and mis-match the high spots you may completely take care of the problem. This is called tire matching. The higher the rubber content, like a mud tire, this effect can be exaggerated. Certain tires are known for not being too round adding to a possible problem. Some steel wheels are hub centric and can be properly balanced by using the center cone method. Most after market steel wheels are not. Defender alloys are hub centric. Balancing by the studs is not the best way if you have a hub centric wheel and flange. Just as trying to center cone balance a wheel that is not hub centric. One way to help get around all of this is get the tire balanced on a "road force Balance machine" Not every shop has these as they are very expensive. It is indeed very hard to find a shop where the installers actually know what they are doing. Looks like it may be a lost art. Or at least an art that is getting lost.

I ran a nato/wolf wheel with a bit of run out with 285 KM2 on it. Tire blew eventually @ highway speed on DC beltway. Wheels are cheep, my advice would be get good/true ones.

Im running custom narrowed disco 1 steelies with 235/85 KM2's. 8oz of BB's in each tire and they run perfect. Plus don't have to worry about knocking weights off in the rocks!
