Starter failed

Starter failed on the truck (V8/4.0). Build date was june 1997

The mean green that was on it had 11 teeth and the one I'm about to put in only has 9 teeth (oem spec)

Any thoughts on if the 9 would make a difference. The engine has never been out of the rig, so I assume the flywheel is the same.

Mean Green uses the cheapest made in China units that they sell for maximum mark up.
The reason for the 11 tooth is the starter pinion gear is not on center.
By moving it to one side, the higher number of teeth mesh properly, but are not as close to the ring gear as the 9 tooth pinion gear which is on center.

Both should work fine.

Thanks. Knew neither of those things about the Mean Green. It came on the truck. Didn't expect it to fail though.

My experience is that Mean Green products don't last.
