Exclamation Stalling Mystery ...or, MISERY !!??

OK, so I took my 1994 D90 to a VERY HIGH END EXOTIC place to get this pesky random stalling crap taking care of!
They cleaned the Mass air flow and idle control valve ( $ 214 labor ) .
It ran like a charm for a week but it has returned !
It has new spark plugs, battery, fuel relay, fuel pump, ECU blah, blah, blah !
They told me that when they had it on diagnostic that two "other potential " problems exist.
1. Idle something....lol ( part around $ 200.00 )
2. Mass airflow censor ( part around 1000.00 ) yikes !

The truck gives me no grief whatsoever early in the morning or late at night !
Air is heavier in warm weather "when it stalls", sooo, is it the M.A.C !!??

If so....does anyone have a fricking Air Flow Censor for less !!????

HELP....lol
Bewildered in Destin, Florida
Christine

Idle control valve ...$40 part from autozone.

If they haven't change it then you've been overcharged and misled by your high end place.

Please detail the circumstances of the stall. Does it happen when idling? Engine hot or cold?

The idle thing they are referring to is called a stepper motor. If this gets cruddy it can malfunction and stick. The one on your engine is the same as any mid 90s Chevy. Retail about $40-60. You can unscrew it with an adjustable wrench and install the new one in less than 5 minutes.
It allows extra air into the engine on deceleration.
Another thing to check is the engine breather t piece. And check for vacuum leaks like cracked hoses. There are several hoses on the intake that can appear good but really have breaks in them. Can cause rough running and stalls.

Cleaning the mass air sensor is pointless. Cleaning a 40 buck part and reinstalling it is ill advised.

I would also like to know the details of your stall. A couple of years ago I had an issue where my truck would almost stall coming off the highway etc. I changed the stepper motor, brought the truck in with no one being able to fix it. Finally I switched the maf with another truck and the issue went mostly away.

Now I dont know how your truck is set up but I think the issue with mine was the borla and a k&n air filter. When I put the stock filter in the issue never came back. Mlorman had the exact same issue with his last 90 and removing the k&n fixed it as well. He also had a borla.

Just something to check.

I still have mine too. Not sure why other than I am a terrible hoarder and I figured someone with a Tdi might want it.

It needs to be properly diagnosed...... This is why people are asking for more details on when it happens. For instance, it could by the VSS as that sets the two different idle modes.

Is your coil getting very hot? I had a weird issue with mine with a hot coil. It would not put out the right voltage for the spark when hot and it stumble to the point of stalling.

Yep, sounds likely to be VSS to me. It is probably throwing a code too. I don't remember the which code but i can check when I get back to my truck since mine is broken now too!

My VSS is throwing a code and it doesn't seem to be too troublesome. Perhaps I just catch it on the throttle.

Check your coil (ignition module) and make sure that the spade connectors on the bottom have a good connection and are not loose. I converted mine to ring terminals for this very reason. If something comes loose, your engine will cut off immediately until it's reconnected (or arcs).
