ST rear tire carrier / tailgate rattling...

Hey there...

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I've addressed this like 6 months ago and was recommended to get the rebuild kits for the rear hinges from Rovers Down South for 8$, got EIGHT of them, replaced the hinges, and now, there is still a lot of rattling...

I've identified the rattling coming from the main hinge right behind the tire - have greased them thoroughly to no avail...

What's the solution? I can't order nice rack from SG or any other place in the US, so I'm thinking of either putting the tire in the rear tub OR custom making a tire carrier...

I'd rather keep it as is - what have you guys done?

Thanks.

what carrier do you have? Is it the tire carrier that is rattling or the trucks door hinges? I'm confussed.

check the rubber bumper- move outwards and create more pressure when closed. Wrap some rubber around that point on the recieving bar for add'l pressure. Solved my problem w/o new hinges. Did do some lube. Marc

Sorry for that - I have the stock "NAS" tire carrier, and the rattling is happening on the carrier hinges, in particular the one that is usually behind the tire...

Marc - I did that...still have issues...maybe I need to make that MORE prominent...

Follow-up Post:

In the same line of thinking...is there a net replacement for the tailgate? If I put the tire flat in the rear section, would be interested in a net - does anyone have a lead? (does this merit a seperate thread?)

Check the washers behind the tire

Before you spend too much time & $ on tracking down the problem, check to make sure the sound is not coming from the washers behind the tire.
They are located between the wheel and the nut (not the lug nut in front) that secures the tire to the carrier on the back side of the wheel - on the threaded part of the carrier. There are three of them.
These rattle when not snug against the wheel and can make a lot of noise.

Good luck,
Art Vigil

A second on those washers. If you put them on backward they will also rattle like crazy

I did this, too. The rubber bumper was completely gone. I put in stainless hardware and have it backed out so it firmly holds the tire carrier away from the door - no rattle, even with old hinges (which need rebuilding).

OK, been fiddling with the carrier for the past couple of weeks:

1. Checked the tailgate hinges, they have no play, however, the tailgate is not 100% solid when closed, no rattling from that end
2. the washers right behind the wheel on each bolt are snug
3. the hinges that are on the passenger-side (two of them) are tight and lubed
4. the hinge at the tailgate moves freely up & down, with a space of about 1/16th" (1mm)
5. the hinge right behind the wheel also has a space and rattles like mad, space is about 1/8th" (2mm)

Points 1 through 3 are no issues to noise...4 was not addressed as I was not able to get the short bolt out??? werid...point 5 was somewhat taken care of as I took the long bolt out, created a "washer" from duck tape so it would drown out the metal or metal rattling, re-installed and seems to work well, however I need to get something more permanent there (plastic/utethane washer)...

Question is, has anyone taken out the short bolt of the hinge of the OEM NAS carrier at the tailgate?

Well, I think I spoke too soon - the thing still rattles ...I'm ditching this and slapping the spare flat in the bed...
