Spares for 1984 2.5 NA Diesel for cross country trip

Hello all,

Picking up my 90 from Baltimore MD and driving it to Colorado and looking for recommendations for what spares / supplies to take along.

Here is the list so far

Spare fan belt
Fuel filter
Spare tire

Spare fluids
90wt, oil, coolant, water, diesel and brake fluid (not sure what fluids to use in trans need to research that)

Spare wire connectors
Roll of electrical wire
Spare fuses (Does a 1984 use blade style or the round glass ones?)
Electrical tape

Duct tape
Bailing wire
PB blaster

Laptop
Cell phone
Sprint Air card
GPS
map

Tools
Metric sockets, ratchet, extensions
Metric wrenches short and long
Assorted screw drivers
Assorted pliers
Crescent wrench and vice grips
Pry bar and hammer
Breaker bar
Test light
Jumper cables
Tow strap

Patience
Ear plugs

Things I am still trying to figure out or arrange

I would like to have a workshop manual that covers my model as the RAVE cd I have is only for NAS but not sure where to find one.

What size are the lug nuts on the factory steel wheels (I have only had alloys)

What route to take from MD to CO and where to stop along the way / areas to avoid

I'll look to see if I can find the book I have on my old NA. I know I have a full parts catalog.

On what to bring, no idea. I do know that nothing really phases that engine. But the trip will be very long at 55mph max on flat ground blowing a cloud of black smoke.

Made it further than half of the other guys, but the Hammers won.

Dave so they finally found your truck, thats a relief. Did all the supplies arrive in it? There was a spare wheel on the rear door when it left, the tyres were 205/16, for a long trip i'd recommend you buy new 235/85 r 16 tyres, for better highway speeds and better gas mileage.

Follow-up Post:

that truck did not smoke when it left, take a spare battery, fluids, and a women for entertainment or to have someone to push!!

Wallenius did "find" it. The truck starts and runs well with a bit of blow by from the breather cap. Julians tire size recomenda(ion might cut hours off the trip. Lug nuts are the same siZe Dave.Let me know your plans and I'll pick you up @ BWI.

My '84 has the round glass ones (AGC)
I'll check to see if my manual covers the 2.5 NA. At least I'm close by.

Redline MTL works in them too, if you just want cheap top-up fluid, use ATF (type F IIRC).

According to Doug everything arrived fine and is in the back of the 90. After the 90 was misplaced I was worried that my stuff in the back would be gone.

Thanks for storing the 90 and dropping if off at the port for me

Too bad Hippert does not hang around anymore, he could become the transporter of old rovers

I am considering getting tires but I am undecided on what size / brand. My last 90 had 255/85/16 and I really like that size but did not care for the BFG MT here in Colorado. If they made a BFG at in that size it would be an easy choice for me but unfortunately they do not. I would consider 235/85 but think I would want to change them in the future for something largerů Maybe I can work a deal with Tom and get some that are not too much $$$ so I do not feel bad if I swap them out in a few months.

Added Gloves and ATF to my list

If anyone wants to watch Dave "live" as he drives (and he wants to be watched) I can lend him my little cell phone I use for tracking, and we can follow him on whereisjaney.com.

Dave, I have a set of 245/70 Goodyear SRA which would probably make a good road tire that you could have, including mounting AND balancing in Hershey, PA, in exchange for a fuel tank skid plate! (I actually need two, but this is a start!)
And, if you don't want the tires, I still want the plates!
Call if you need anything

I'd take coolant and water after the experience with the cooling system in my '83.

I am in philadelphia I am PMing you my cell. As everyone knows, I don't sleep at night so you can call with issue and I can fedex parts if need be (no diesel, but I have everything else and I know where there is a 2.5 for spares nearby).

Dave left my place outside Annapolis 11:30 EST today with the 90. He was going to meet Trevor @ Treasured Motorcars so they could give the fluids the once over before truly begining the trip tomorrow. Dave said he drove straight through from Colorado in 30hrs. Be interesting to see how long it takes to get back in a 2.25 na diesel.

It's not the 2.5 as the title of the thread says?
