Spare tire carrier question

Hey,

Has anybody tried to put a NAS soft top spare tire carrier on a hardtop truck. the main limiting point I see is the difference in the rear door thickness.

Any input would be great.

Thanks, -Gustaf

Hey Gus
Been contemplating the same thing. I do recall seeing it in person somewhere but that was before Ron explained to me that it is impossible. I think differently, but you will need to do some mods to make it sit correctly. Not sure what all the issues are but I do know you will have to grind off a bracket off the top hinge closest to the door.

The 100" truck on the roverhybrids site shows one installed but the photos don't show all the detail. I contacted the owner and he was only able to recall vague details.

Anything is possible but you are better off with a Mantec or mantec clone. As Dave says, the brackets sit in the recess of the tailgate so they have to be cut/modified at the least.

Shorten the arm the same distance as the difference between the face of the door and the recess of the tailgate mounting location and it should work fine.

The angle bracket on the upper pipe for the cup thing will interfere with the door and without it you cannot keep the door open. Also, when I looked at the thing, it looked like the arm would bind because the angle would be so tight with the door closed.

I did it on my SW... Worked great with a little customization.

You could always just fit a lift gate instead of a door. A series lift gate will work fine. You don't need a POE gate or a specific defender lift gate. If you end up going that route send me a email and I can take a few pictures of the complete setup.

Cheers

Spare tire carrier

Hey Guys,

Why not a Mantec? I got one on now... but it squeaks like a Mo Fo even if greased, maybe I shinned it wrong??? but the biggest problem I have with it is it moves parallel with the door, as where the NAS ST one swings out and clears the body. who cares? well I would like to put a bike carrier on the tire carrier it would be great if I could open it without having to take off the bike or crunching it into the back of the truck. I know it's kinda a lame excuse, maybe in my years I am getting more G4 than Camel.

I remember you have a ST when I rode with you down at the solaris event. didn't know you had two? atta boy!

RED CHING, ECR, ROVERX, EVILIJ.
Thank you for the help and pictures, your help is invaluable. I just didn't want to go blowing holes in the 110.

Will post pics when I am done.

-Gustaf

PS Mantec might need a new home soon...
