So now I know what its like in a 90 with a 2.5 NA

Driving to work this morning I suddenly lost a LOT of power. Thought it was a blown turbo or slipping clutch initially, but I could still hear it spooling up and the clutch was fine in lower gears (and lower speeds). So I pulled over and saw that one of my silicone intercooler hoses had popped off on the turbo-side. Cheese and rice, I never realized how spoiled I was with a turbo'ed Diesel. I'm not sure I have the patience to drive a 2.5 NA...

Yep. When I blew my turbo on the highway, my immediate thoughts where that my clutch when out, since I had never experienced a turbo failure before (or had a turbo for that matter). It wasn't until I saw the smoke plum in my rear view mirror that I realized it wasn't clutch. That was the moment I also saw the value of a boost gauge.

Since then, I've had my boost signal line pop off the turbo a couple times (need to source a better small diameter clamp) and the boost gauge immediately verified what had happened.

When that turbo failed it was like my 110 became a riding mower.

isn't the true value on a EGT gauge more than a Booster gauge?

Sure, we can trade a 90 for a 110, let me know when you want to meet!

The EGT gauge is the "gotta have". the boost is the "nice to have". different tools for different insights.

Boost will tell if I have leaks in the system and if boost is being generated. you wouldn't get that from an EGT.

EGT tells me when to BACK OFF! I don't know about you but my EGT shouts at me on the highway going up hills and I don't like it's manners.

Out of all my gauges, the EGT is the one I constantly look at. I don't care about speed, boost, fuel, or RPMs, I want to know if my turbo will melt!

I don't think I would go with a boost gauge again. Yeah its nice to know what the turbo is putting out @ a certain rpm but there are other metrics I'd like to know more than boost pressure.

Turbo shmurbo anything over 45mph is excessive in a 90. You boyracer types should be ashamed, in fact so ashamed that you'll trade your Tdi speed machines for my civilized ex-mod.
