I've had a few decks skimmed and a pressure test was always the first step. Thought this was standard procedure at any machine shop. It takes a few minutes to blank the water outlets and pressurize the head at 40psi.

The original poster says the head he bought was checked and pressure tested.

His issue is smoke and down on power after over heating and replacing the head and injectors. Since the injection pump hasn't been touched, timing not touched. I'm betting compression is way down

Well I bought an adapter for my compression gauge and did not realize that the gauge is insufficient. It only goes to 300 psi and the first cylinder burried the needle somewhere around 350. I will have to get an appropriate gauge. I also checked to see if there was any pressure coming out of the dipstick tube when the engine was reved and no there was not. I replaced the oil breather/separator just in case my cleaning was not good enough. The trucks power seems to be better from the rebuilt injectors.

It is still smoking smoking in the morning but I have a theory about what's going on. I think the turbo is so shot that its leaking oil into the intake. That oil is what is smoking when it's cold. This is also why there is oil in the pipe that goes to the intercooler. Am I way out there with this thought? Isn't this how diesel engines run away?

Oh, and I found a leak in my radiator and had one sent from paddockspares. Installed it today and coolant level seems to be good now.

it's possible. could be center section seal or bushings. grab the compressor wheel with your fingertips and wiggle to check for play. any noticeable play and you found a problem.

If you have oil in your intake pipe... Then yes, the turbo cassette is no good..
