smoking exhaust d90

Hello all quick question. I have been driving the new 'toy' with endless joy until yesterday when I noticed a burning smell while stopped. After extensive investigation I found the culprit. On the diagram from rovers north on the Y part of the exhaust (actually marked exhaust system) there is a little smoke coming from what may be the converter. Not any particular color or even that much but obviously it is a concern. I do not see any leaks in the vicinity or wet spots. Should this be addressed immediatley or may it be road debris that will eventually 'burn off'? Thanks for any advice

could be crap from the road.

But to be sure check this at night after a nice long or high speed drive. if the converters or the area around them are glowing orange you may have a blocked converter causing a heat build up and some smoking.

They should have a nice coat of rust on them at this point, no black crap or anything wet. Also check from above with a flashlight to see if anything is dripping on the exhaust from above or any wiring touching it

thanks I will take a long drive tonight and look for glowing. That would be a major concern of any blockage and sounds pretty easy to figure out!

if you converter is blocked you may also see a decrease is performance/mileage or some codes depending on the model year.

The likely culprit is something touching or dripping onto the exhaust or junk from the road
