Shortening the turn signal lever?

I'm curious to hear if someone ever took apart a turn signal assembly and more specifically the lever out of the assembly?
I don't want to take mine apart (it's working and can't complain about it just yet! ) but would love to buy a new one for a project -if- I can shorten the lever by 2 inches. So before I spend $40 on a part, I'd love to know if that would even work in the first place.

I did buy a universal turn signal switch, the lever can be shortened -but- I (think I) figured out that it is really made for a system where stop and signals are together (like, it appears, all "universal" turn signal switches). I have no intention of having that kind of setup. So I am now looking for an alternative and figured that a LR part might be a good starting point after all.
